Today we headed off on the first day of our Bali road trip. We decided to leave on a Sunday because we noticed that there is less traffic on a Sunday. We headed north on Jalan Legian and went through places such as Seminyak, Pettinget and Canggu. We tried to avoid the main roads, but after navigating some very rural roads we jumped back on the main road that heads up the north west side of Bali, the road to the ferry that crosses to Java.
We quickly realised that this is a heavy transport route and we were often stuck behind trucks and rarely, if ever, exceeded 60kmh.
Along the way we hoped to stop at Balian beach. It wasn't showing on google maps but we found it about a kilometre off the highway. You'll see from the photos that tourism hasn't yet arrived other than a few surfers. It was nice to be away from the maddening crowd of the Kuta district.
After about an hour at Balian we recommenced the journey, this time with the ocean mostly in view. The destination was Melaya, about 20km past Negara. The directions we were given by our host were quite good and we found ourselves in a lovely room next to the beach. The beaches of northern Bali have black sand as you'll see in the photos.
Across the Bali Strait we have glimpses of Java. Plenty of fishing boats.
The area is known for buffalo races and some were walked past along the beach.
It's very remote here. Only about 6 villas which we are told are owned by Dutch and English people. The owner of this place, Colin, is a Pom. We haven't met him as he lives in Lovina, I think!
