Melaya to Lovina (13/10)

Spent an absolutely beautiful morning alongside the beach at Melaya before eventually departing en route to Lovina via Gilimanuk.

Last night we were treated to the lights of fishing boats and, we assumed, the lights of Java across the Bali Strait. When we awoke, and the sea mist lifted, we could see Java and its volcanoes aka Ijen Mountains.

Our accommodation, the service and the area was absolutely beautiful. Could we tolerate a longer stay?? Extremely tranquil and very remote......we were already booked at Lovina so off we headed.

The first major town was Gilimanuk. From here a number of ferries cross back and forwards to Java. A short trip of about 3km I believe. Not much to see so we left the west coast for the north coast headed east towards Lovina.

Along the way we saw monkeys, and stopped at a beach before finally getting to Lovina and finding Ima Guest House. Directions provided were not very good so we reached Singaraja (Lion King) before returning to Lovina. Ima has five guest rooms and it seems that at least three are occupied by Europeans.

Lovina has dolphin watching tours (boat) and the hotel across the road has dolphins in swimming pools that you can swim with. Heather doesn't want to get up at 6am for the boat ride and I don't want to spend $125 for a 20 minute swim, so we'll miss the dolphins unless we go to the show. I think that's only $15.

This makes two days of driving in Bali and no accidents. Nearly got cleaned up by an ambulance yesterday. Yes, an ambulance! After being stuck behind two trucks for quite some time I finally got the chance to overtake. As I was alongside the second truck an ambulance appeared from the opposite direction. It pulled to its left as I pulled back into my lane. Close, but not that close!

We spend the whole day (14th) here at Lovina tomorrow.
