Cayman Islands

Cayman Islands (Grand Cayman more specifically) was a welcome relief after Cuba and Cuban homestays. Even moving on from the language difficulties of us not speaking Spanish!

We spent three nights and two full days on the main island, which is quite small. Ten miles long and maximum width of five miles. Most people live either in or around George Town, the capital city, and its popular and beautiful 7 Mile Beach. The islands are popular due to climate and crystal clear waters. Cruise ships often pull into the harbour.

We hired a car as they drive on the left hand side and it allowed us to travel further afield than George Town.

We had accommodation via airbnb and that worked out well. Modern apartment complex with swimming pool. Not all that well located but we had the car to get where we needed to.

We had heavy rain for a couple of hours each day so we spent time at Coconut Joe's with free wifi. Also the beach, and on our drive we discovered Rum Point. Rum Point was the most beautiful beach location I have ever seen. It would be a long way to come back, but if we ever do I will certainly be spending time at Rum Point. And when that huge tattslotto win occurs, i might even buy a property there.

On another matter, there's heaps of small, beachside cemeteries here.

Finally, we were told that it's not uncommon for Caymanian's to offer people lifts. Heather was offered a lift the first morning (by a black man and I didn't see her again for six hours!). Anyway, on our return trip from Rum Point when it was threatening to rain, a woman indicated she wanted a lift. So we stopped and she turned out to be a Jamaican working in age care. As she only gets paid monthly, getting a free ride is better than paying for the irregular bus, or getting wet whilst waiting.

As we got a few kms down the road and the sky was getting blacker we found another person indicating they wanted a lift. As we still had a spare seat we pulled over again. This time we collected a young Jamaican carpenter. He was going all the way to Georgetown.

Would we have picked them up if not told about the custom of offering people a lift???
